Yes, once again when Firefox did its update IT DID NOT CARRY OVER ALL OF OUR BOOKMARKS!! What is with this. And, no i did not back them up. What is the major problem? The folder that it is supposed to save to the desktop that has all the old stuff in it DID NOT HAVE ANYTHING in the bookmark backups folder?? I love Firefox to death but this error is not acceptable. What can i do?

hi drodrigues58,

If you were using Sync before and haven't reset the Firefox Account password then you might be able to retrieve the bookmarks. Otherwise you would need a backup, either a JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder in the profile folder that Firefox creates automatically or an HTML backup that you have created yourself or a backup copy of places.sqlite. If you do not have either then your bookmarks are likely lost.

Please explain. Were no bookmarks saved, or are there some missing? Where were those in the Bookmarks manager?

After Firefox updated the top bookmarks bar was empty and the list that is usually found in the Favorites pop down was gone! This has happened before after an update! I don't understand why it can't just bring them over? I was told by another reader to activate sync so I have and hopefully that helps. I will also export my bookmarks just in case.

Restore Bookmark Backups

Firefox automatically makes backups of the bookmarks. These are stored in the bookmarkbackups folder.

Open the Bookmarks Manager; Press the Alt or F10 key to bring up the toolbar, and select Bookmarks. Hot key is <Control> (Mac=<Command>) <Shift> B. Firefox 84+ <Control> (Mac=<Command>) <Shift> O.

Once the window is open, at the top of the page, press the button labeled Import and Backup. Select Restore. From the list, pick the file you want and click it.

The backups are stored in a jsonlz4 file named something like this; bookmarks-2016-06-29_1424_enD1GTH ya0JmicnYWg4V4g==.jsonlz4

In this example; 2016-06-29 = date created, 1424 = number of entries.

do you know what folder that backup file is in because I looked in the Backups folder in firefox and it was empty. It probably did save the old one because I tried to install an older version to try and get things back but of course that didn't work.

Firefox automatically makes backups of the bookmarks. These are stored in the bookmarkbackups folder.

If this folder is empty, the browser is not making backups.

Bookmark Backups Settings

Firefox automatically makes backups of the bookmarks. These are stored in the bookmarkbackups folder. You can set how many backups are kept by doing this;

Type about:config<enter> in the address bar. If a warning screen comes up, press the I Accept the Risk button. At the top of the screen is a search bar. Type browser.bookmarks.max_backups

The values for this setting are; -1 = unlimited number of backups 0 = Do not create any backups Any other number here will keep that many backups Example: 5 = 5 backups are kept.

The backups are stored in a jsonlz4 file named something like this; bookmarks-2016-06-29_1424_enD1GTHya0JmicnYWg4V4g ==.jsonlz4 In this example; 2016-06-29 = date created, 1424 = number of entries.
