Touchpad scrolling doesn't work in FF 4

more options

Vertical and horizontal scrolling using the Alps touch pad on my Lenovo ThinkPad SL300 does not work in Firefox 4.0. It works in other programs and in Windows Explorer. I have downloaded and installed the latest version of the Lenovo touchpad driver. OS is Windows XP SP3. Scrolling worked in FF 3.6.15.

I had the same problem with a Acer Aspire 7740G Ifound this on the Notebook Review forum and it works :

For all who have problem with the standard ALPS touchpad driver in firefox 4; here is a quick registry fix: 1) Open registry with regedit 2) Search for following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Alps\Apoint 3) Set ScrMethod to 1 4) Reboot

After that scrolling in FF4 should be possible.

PS: I heard that this option stresses the CPU a little bit more, but its fine for me.

Hi! I do not have the value ScrMethod but maybe this can be created? Can you say what type this has on you system?

I tried: (1) creating a new DWORD in key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Alps\Apoint (2) named it ScrMethod (3) and set the value to 1 but this did not work (after reboot)

Thank you for your assistance! Really happy with FF4 but not being able to scroll is sort of a deal breaker...

@ dog425

On my Acer Aspire I have a ALPS touchpad with the driver 7.105.2015.1105.If you have the same try to reinstall the driver and I think you'll find the value ScrMethod. On my PC ScrMethod is a DWORD 32 bits, the name of value ScrMethod, data value 1, base Hexadecimal

I think I've found the perfect universal solution to this!! Just install the "Yet another Smooth Scrolling" addon and it works! (the addon is available to firefox 4 and may put a little bit of strain on the CPU , but it works and you also get the "smooth scroll" added effect! ) wonderful!

Let me know if you people find this helpful.

Cheers.

Its due to the adobe reader add on. I removed adobe reader and installed foxit reader. Now everything seems perfect. My laptop model is model is Acer Aspire 5820 TG and I use synaptics driver.

If you have issues with touch-pad scrolling in FF4 do this: 1) disable Adobe Acrobat add-on and test if it works, otherwise 2) install the latest touch-pad driver. Hope this will help others.

Edit:

If the above does not work, temporarily disable all add-ons in order to check if there is another one that may cause this.

Also, make sure you update to the latest touch-pad driver from the touch-pad manufacturer site (very easy to do if you have a Synaptics). Most of the time drivers from notebook manufacturer support site are NOT up to date.

Keep in mind that you may need to do both things (disable acrobat AND install latest driver). Both are possible causes and may occur at the same time, as it was in my case.

Edit 2:

If you have an ALPS touch-pad and none of the above works, check dog425's post below in this topic. He pointed out a solution found in this thread: https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/791829#answer-163071

For Thinkpad users, try this fix that my colleague Thomas derived: This worked for me, and might work for you too if you have a process called apoint.exe running on your computer and middle-mouse scrolling works in all other programs but NOT in Firefox . You can check for apoint.exe by pressing Ctrl-Alt-Delete to bring up Task Manager and sorting the processes by name, then checking for apoint.exe under the As.

When it starts up, apoint.exe reads a data file called tp4table.dat. There were several copies on my machine, so I searched the entire C:\ drive and then modified all of them. I opened each one in notepad.exe and added these lines:

;Firefox
*,*,firefox.exe,*,*,MozillaWindowClass,WheelStd,0,9
*,*,firefox.exe,*,*,MozillaDropShadowWindowClass,WheelStd,0,9
*,*,firefox.exe,*,*,MozillaUIWindowClass,WheelStd,0,9

under the section whose comment says something like "these rules are loaded last". Make sure the lines are in the right section (e.g., not in the [Autoscroll] section) otherwise the firefox.exe lines won't have any effect.

After you're done editing all those files, close Firefox. Then go to Task Manager again and "End Process" apoint.exe. Then start it from Start->Run. On my system the full program path is C:\program files\apoint2k\apoint.exe. Confirm in Task Manager that apoint.exe reappears in the process list. Then start Firefox and try scrolling.

Your post worked great! Except for a small copying problem - looks like FF replaced the first asterisk with a small circle at the front of each line. Here it is corrected for ease of copying for the next person.

; Firefox (added by me on DATE)
 *,*,firefox.exe,*,*,MozillaWindowClass,WheelStd,0,9
 *,*,firefox.exe,*,*,MozillaDropShadowWindowClass,WheelStd,0,9
 *,*,firefox.exe,*,*,MozillaUIWindowClass,WheelStd,0,9
; end of Firefox entry mod

Again - thanks! It totally worked just as you directed.
