At the top of my firefox screen are the options: File, Edit, View, etc.

Withing the "File" I used to have in the drop down menu an item called "close".

Now the only option I have to leave a panel is exit. However, I have to restart firefox every time I want to leave an item.

How do I restore the "close" item?

Some menu entries in the main menu bar are hidden if you use the mouse and only appear if you use the keyboard to open the menu (Bug 626825).

You can see the difference if you use Alt+F to open the File menu or Alt+B to open the Bookmarks menu and compare that to what you see if you use the mouse to open the menu after you have made the menu bar visible by tapping Alt or by pressing F10.

This reply was semi helpful. Why do we have to ALT +F and a mouse click to what we used to do with a couple of mouse clicks?

That is because those items can be found elsewhere in an other menu.
You can close a tab with a double-click on that tab or via the right-click context menu of a tab.
You can't access the tab context menu with the keyboard, so you can still use the keyboard to open the file menu and other menus to have access to all items.
