Have FireFox 28 on both my PC and laptop. On the PC the desktop shortcut goes to the webpage it's supposed to. On the laptop however it starts the default starting page of FireFox. Already tried to reset the default settigns, but that didn't work. I suppose a setting in a configuration file has changed, but cannot find out exactly which one. Cannot find any clues about this either on the help pages not on the internet.

I'm a bit confused on what you are trying to do here.

Are you trying to set the second PCs home page to match the first one?
You can do this via the Options in Firefox.

  • Click the orange Firefox button then click on Options
  • Click the General tab and remove the about:home from the Home page field and input your desired page.

If the short-cut is not working, delete it. Then go to that page manually. After you get there, create a new short-cut.

Is this an internet shortcut (file created by dragging a link to the desktop) or a Firefox desktop shortcut with a possible URL appended to the target field in its properties?

Hi everyone,

Thanks for your replies. However I think each of them misses the point. I realize that I should have given ( even ) more information, so sorry about that. I will try and do that here.

It's about a link to a website like www.website.com ( is a fake name for example purposes!! ). It has worked on both my PC and laptop!! Somewhere along the way ( cannot quite remember when ) there was an update of some kind on my laptop, that apparantly hasn't occured on my PC ( yet ), that has caused the link to 'break'. Therefore I suspect it's a setting matter of some kind, but cannot figure out which one and where to (re)set. Also because the problem stays when I try to delete and recreate the link, also by dragging it from the website to the desktop.

Hope this addition give you sufficient information. If not, don't hesitate to ask further questions.

Thanks in advance.

Note that I asked above if this was an issue with an internet shortcut on your desktop.

Do you mean that you can't create a desktop shortcut to a specific page that you can open in a Firefox tab?

Do these pages work as a bookmark?

Note that pages that are generated via JavaScript or AJAX calls or have frames are not suited as a desktop shortcut because you may get an empty page or a different page.

@cor-el. Don't mean to be rude, so sorry if you got that impression, but have you read my previous reply? If so, what exactly is not clear to you? It's a plain site without any bookmarks or so and - again - it HAS WORKED ... till a certain update in 27.1.1 ( as I remember correctly ). From that time on my laptop FireFox starts it's default homepage instead of the page in the desktop link. BTW, have the same problem too when I try to start localhost test sites or PHPMyAdmin through XAMPP from a desktop link.
