Unable to select 'Do This Automatically' When Download Certain Type of File

Hello, I have a very specific issue regarding what I understand to be a common problem with downloading files.

When trying to download files for the program Guitar Pro I cannot select 'Do This Automatically' when saving the file. I could live with just clicking Ok over and over again, except that every single time the first choice is to open the file, and when I opt to save instead I'm not allowed to select where the file saves to. I can't select 'Save as...' because of the websites design so currently my process is this:

Click Download --> Window Opens --> Select 'Save file' --> Click 'Ok' --> Go to Firefox download folder --> Cut file --> Paste into Guitar Pro folder

As you can imagine, this is a gigantic pain when I have to regularly download several files at a time.

I've downloaded extensions suggested in other threads to force actions for certain file types but I have no idea how to apply them to my specific issue because 90% of them seemed to deal with forcing torrents to open in a torrent client.

I've included a link to the website I use to get files, using a different site isn't really an option because almost all alternatives just link back to this one: http://tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/a/avenged_sevenfold/bat_country_ver6_guitar_pro.htm

If anyone could help/advise, I would be very grateful.

Nice taste in music ;-) In order to remember this for next time there is a preference you can set for a file type in the Applications portion of the Preferences/Options menu. You can select an action that is associated with a file type there. There are also macros add ons you can check out in the [addons.mozilla.org] site.

Check that out and post back if this fits the work flow.

I went looking but could not find what you described.

You can only use 'Do This Automatically' if the server sends the file with the correct MIME type. If the file is send with a generic file type then you do not have this possibility.

Thanks for the replies.

I can't set a file preference because for whatever reason Firefox recognises the file as a Guitar Pro file in the save window, but not before that. Even after saving, it doesn't appear in the file preferences part of the settings menu.

I have a feeling this is down the horrible design of the website, rather than a problem with Firefox, because I check the page info and it keeps the file as a generic htm right up until Firefox has to save it.

Is there anything I can do/add-ons I can use that can force Firefox to take a specific download action to take whenever I click on the download button of the website?

Sorry if that doesn't make much sense, I'm not really up on my techspeak.

Welcome to the club. There are some Mozilla Add-ons {web link} that should help, but they don't always work.
