I have Win XP Pro SR-3 & Firefox 28.0. I wanted to update to the latest Firefox version by going to Help/About/Check for updates. However, the new version does 2 things that I can't change:

1. It removed the sidebar that contained all my extensions & I can't find them. Can I restore the sidebar? 2. The color of the new tabs that are not active is the same color as the strip that they're on, so their very hard to read. Can I change the color of inactive tabs...or better yet, the strip that they're on?

I also have a 3rd general question. I had a lot of trouble getting to this forum. I had to go to a question that I asked a year ago & then ask a new question. I also couldn't logon to Mozillazine & don't know the difference between that forum & this one. Could you please enlighten me & tell me what the easiest way to first search & then ask a question?

Thank you in advance

While Mozilla is one company, it has several independent web sites. If you want full access to a site, you need an account for each.

During the install, did you get any messages from the installer?

It is possible that you have a new profile. Look on your desktop. do you see a folder called; Old Firefox?

Follow these instructions to see all the user profiles on your system. The profile with the current date/time is your current profile. Are there any others that have a recent date?

Open a new tab or window. type about:support in the address box and press enter. Or Press the Alt or F10 key to bring up the tool bar. Then Help > Troubleshooting Information.

Under the page logo on the left side you will see Application Basics. Under this find Profile Folder. To it’s right press the button Show Folder. This will open your file browser to the current Firefox profile. Now Close Firefox.

Have the file browser go up one level to the parent folder. From here you will see all profiles. Look at the dates of the folders.

Hi Fred: Thanks so much for your quick responses.

I got no messages from the installer.

When I upgraded, I used my backup program, True Image, which has a "Try & Decide" option. When I lost all my extensions, I "undid" the upgrade, so I'm back to Firefox 28.0.

I will redo the upgrade, again using "Try & Decide", but I'll follow your instructions above to see if I can keep my profile without "reverting". I'll let you know what happens when I try it tomorrow.

Thanks again for all your help.

You can look at the Classic Theme Restorer extension to customize the appearance in Firefox 29 and later and make it look like older Firefox versions.

  • You can check out the settings of the CTR extension via its Options/Preferences button on the "Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions" page.
  • You can find extra toolbar buttons and more toolbar settings in Customize (3-bar Firefox menu button > Customize)
