To add on to the above: Firefox can create portable bookmark files in two formats: a compressed backup file, which is more complete (for example, it includes tags you may have attached to individual bookmarks), and an HTML export format, which is cross-browser compatible and easily readable as a web page. I suggest creating files in both formats just in case something goes wrong with one of the files.
