I got a message that popped up and took up the whole screen and looked like it came from Firefox to update java for firefox when I clicked on it, it downloaded a file from ungecchinadaily.net is it legit? I deleted it.

No it is not legit. The fake ads claiming to have a update for Plugins like Java and Flash Player have popped up on occasion for years. Only get Java from oracle.com or java.com

You likely do not need the Java Plugin for anything and it is separate from the JavaScript in Firefox.
