can't print from thunderbird, program freezes

I was using Thunderbird 45.4.0 under Windows 10. For a whole now I cannot print anymore, if I select the print or print preview menu the program hangs up and needs to be restarted.

I tried to disable the Windows firewall to no avail. I updated Thunderbird to 45.8.0, same problem.

I read about some similar problems and used Tools/Options/Config Editor to reset print_printer. I also reset some other variables that looked weird.

Problem is not solved; rather, the print entry is now grayed out in the menu. I noticed in the config editor that it contains some printers that I have not been using for years.

Any help highly appreciated. I would hate to have to recreate my profile, which harbours quite a bunch of accounts with their config.

Based on another article I have reset the print.print_printer entry of the old printer that is long gone. The entry appears to be gone now as well. I recreates print_printer with value default. The print entry in the menu is now not grayed out anymore, but the initial problem persists: program hangs up if I select print.

I had read in another report that if print.print_printer doesn’t show up in the settings anymore (which was the case, I only saw print_printer) they had to reset both print.print_printer and print_printer. I did that (recreated print.print_printer and set it as well as print_printer to string default). Now I am back at the print entry in the menu being grayed out....
