How to clear cookies and cache without losing passwords?

more options

I'm at the point where I can't check my email in firefox, and I'm hoping clearing cache/cookies helps. But, how do I do it without losing all my passwords?

I'm getting the following error when I try to check my email in firefox, but it works in Chrome:

Something went wrong Repeating redirects detected.

Don't worry about the passwords. They are separate.

Many site issues can be caused by corrupt cookies or cache.

Warning ! ! This will log you out of sites you're logged in to. You may also lose any settings for that website.

If there is still a problem, Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} by holding down the <Shift> (Mac=Options) key, and then starting Firefox.

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Did this help?

While you are in safe mode;

Try disabling graphics hardware acceleration {web link} in Firefox. Since this feature was added to Firefox it has gradually improved but there are still a few glitches.

How does this not affect logins and passwords:

Your ‘logged-in’ status is stored in special cookies. If the cookie is removed, you are logged out.

The Password Manager would not be affected.

Note that there is a difference between passwords store in the Password Manager and special 'remember me' cookies that websites create when you place a tick in a checkbox to remember you and log you in automatically.

I'm not sure which kind of passwords I have saved... probably both? How to I preserve both?

Hi Spider, do you use Firefox's Password Manager? The credentials shown when you use the "Saved Logins" button on the Options page are not stored in cookies, they are stored in a file called logins.json. Clearing cookies -- using Firefox features, I can't vouch for utility software -- doesn't remove the logins.json file.

You can check your logins saved in Firefox's password manager here:

  • Windows: "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options
  • Mac: "3-bar" menu button (or Firefox menu) > Preferences
  • Linux: "3-bar" menu button (or Edit menu) > Preferences
  • Any system: type or paste about:preferences into the address bar and press Enter/Return to load it

In the left column, click "Privacy & Security".

Then on the right side, scroll down to the Logins & Passwords section.

Click the "Saved Logins" button.
