When I scan the QR code shown on my computer with my phone and press the sync buttons, I get a message on my phone to; "Open the authentication app and enter the security code it provides."

I have no idea what this app is or where to find it to open it. Is it on my phone or my computer? Why can't you just show the code on my computer sync screen?

And, your help pages just repeat the same instruction verbiage as the sync app on my phone. No additional help at all!

Sounds like you also have enabled Two-Factor Authentication for Sync. 2FA works with a 6-digit time dependent (TOTP;Time-based One-Time Password) code that is only valid for thirty seconds, so the time needs to be correct on all devices. This TOTP code is usually generated by an Authenticator app on the mobile device.

For signing in you can also use the email address and password instead of scanning a QR code.
