There is something in FF4 that is causing my second ATI card to power up and be used when it has not done this before (FF3 and earlier). Something in the FF4 code is making the vid card think it is rendering a 3D application.

Im running an ATI 5970 2gb oc and im getting a similar issue.

after digging around i noticed that it happens when i visit a site with alot of flash media (ads etc) or view videos in the browser.

from what i can tell there is a huge bug in firefox 4 where it is overutilizing the graphics hardware (possibly a memory leak of sorts too) and cause the the GPU' to stress.

my problem extends further where my GPU's end up in a permanent stressed state untill i either reboot or disable and re-enable my card manually.

likely cause, poor utilization of hardware acceleration.
