Using Firefox 4.0.1; Windows 7; fast laptop.

When searching for IMAGES in Google, Firefox now fails on two counts:

1. Only images on "page 1" load. No images for "page 2" and beyond load anymore; they only show as gray'd out spaces. The only way to see additional images is to scroll to the bottom and choose "Switch to basic version."

2. The images that load on "page 1" no longer increase in size nor display info as they used to when the cursor hovers over the images.

The problem began a few weeks ago when using Firefox 3.6. I upgraded to Firefox 4.0, but the problems still exist.

When using IE 8.0, everything works perfectly.

I hate the thought of switching to IE, but as it is now, I have no choice if the problems with Firefox can't be fixed.

Does anyone know how to fix the problems?

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

In Firefox 4 you can use one of these to start in Safe mode:

  • Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • Hold down the Shift key while double clicking the Firefox desktop shortcut (Windows)

Restarting in Safe Mode caused Firefox to work properly. Thank you! But can you give us the steps we need to take to get Firefox to remain working properly when starting normally, not in Safe Mode?

Thanks again. Everyone reading this appreciates your help.

If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.

  • Use "Disable all add-ons" on the Safe mode start window to disable all extensions.
  • Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

It's the XURLRunner 1.9.1. Disable and you should see all your images. I found this out through the the process of illimination. I do not know what this add-on does. With this turned off I can see all the pages of Google Images.

XURLRunner 1.9.1 is considered malware and you should remove if if you see it in Tools > Add-ons > Extensions.

Wow, do you guys really expect a novice or beginner computer user to be able to follow these steps and solve this problem? I don't!

What in the world were you FireFox people thinking!?

If you allow programs to install malware on your computer that affects Firefox then you can expect that it takes some effort to get rid of if.

I have been a hater of Internet Exploder for years - but the broken behaviour with Google image mouseover popups is a complete deal breaker for me. When I had incrementally upgraded to FF 3.6.17 - the mouseover image popups in Google still worked. Once I went to FF 4.01 - this was broken. I removed 4.01 and reinstalled 3.6.17 (single install) and the broken behaviour persists. Every other browser behaves properly in this respect except FF. It has nothing to do with add ons, plugins or extensions. Even with safe mode and everything disabled the Google image mouseover popups are still broken.

This is a BUG and until it is fixed, FF is no longer my browser of choice.

I had scanned all the problems and answers that folks had come up with... none of them seemed right, but they did lead me to the Windows Firewall...

Firefox was NOT enabled...

Once I added it to the list of programs allowed to talk to the Internet everything worked... TOO WELL!!!

Make sure you have Noscript running, a GOOD antivirus, and hopefully SpoBot as well before you open up that door!!!<G>

Hope this helps!

I don't have the malware add-on so mentioned in the possible fix; and after starting Firefox 4 in safe mode, no difference, just the one page of images in Google. This is a bug that needs fixing; I'm often forced to use IE.....

I don't have any of the extensions you mentioned, but several weeks ago (probably coinciding with some Firefox upgrade), I started having problems with Google images. Used to get page after page of Google images. Now only about 4 rows load, although it states that several thousands images popped up as a result of my query. How do I fix this? BTW, Google images works fine in IE.

Try to disable Google Instant results via the Google Search Settings page to see if that helps.
