no no no. its not an add on issue. Here is what you do. Click on VIEW in the tool bar. Point to TOOLBARS. A drop down box will open that lists all the tool bars. scroll down to the bottom and choose CUSTOMIZE. A box will open that allows you to remove or add options to the tool bars and change ICONS to WORDS, ot both. Thats how you get rid of all those unnecessary bells and whistles that I personally dont ever use anyway. good luck

Using the `customize', one can remove the icons next to the bookmark names but it also replaces the back, forward, reload, stop and home icons in the url bar with text (see image below). This doesn't affect my main issue which is the space taken by the icons next to the actual bookmarks in the bookmark bar but it doesn't look so nice.
