When I use AOL.com through FireFox, words that are in the persdict.dat file are ignored by the spell checker. Also, words that I add to the dictionary while in AOL "compose" do not end up going to the persdict.dat file. Is AOL using a different dictionary? Does it simply not access the persdict.dat file? Can that be fixed?

Please provide a screenshot of that AOL "compose" window where you have typed something that is misspelled.

Words that you add to the file persdict.dat are only not flagged as errors. Those words do not show as spell suggestions if that is what you mean. It is possible that websites disable the build-in spell checker via a spellcheck="false" attribute and may provide their own via a spell button.

  • You can see which dictionary is selected if you right-click in a text area and open the Languages submenu.
  • Open the "Add Dictionaries" link to install a dictionary if you do not have one.
  • Make sure that [X] "Check Spelling" in the right-click context menu is check-marked.
