if you want to set the text size/pixel density in firefox different from that of your system's settings like it was handled in prior versions, enter about:config into the firefox address bar (confirm the info message in case it shows up) & search for the preference named layout.css.devPixelsPerPx. double-click it and change its value to 1.0 (or any other zoom factor that fits your purpose; -1.0 is the default value and will adhere to the system settings).

I would like to go back to the way it was in version 21, what font style should i set layout.css.devPixelsPerPx to? I seriously cannot stand big webpages, help would be appreciated.

Hi Turnerten, what is your Windows DPI setting?

For example, if you have Windows set to 125% (or 120 DPI) then your chrome area (menus, toolbars, tabs) should look normal and content (web pages) should be zoomed up by 25%.

Is that what you have?

To zoom web pages back down, try one of these extensions to set a global content zoom value of 80%:

• Default FullZoom Level
• NoSquint

After setting your Global zoom level, you can still fine-tune the zoom on individual sites using Firefox's standard zoom feature (keyboard shortcut or mouse wheel).

Does that work for you?

(If your Windows zoom is higher, e.g., 150%, the corresponding global zoom level would be 67%.)

I still think that the icons of the add-ons are too big relatively to the others for example of the menu bar. Any idea ?

Hi flofl0, I think the scaling should apply to the whole area evenly, but I haven't made a careful comparison.

Could the difference be that the add-on author didn't include a high resolution icon so the scaling makes those icons blurrier at the same size?

I almost broke all my config (1095 as a parameter was clearly a bad idea but not for my finger which pressed enter anyway >_<) happily FF is breakable as it is fixable :) Is there any parameter to let FF do things like before ? Frankly I think it would be amazing :) why a thing that was perfect was broken ?

"1" seems to be the "like" before options for the addons icons but fonts of menu and tabs names are little with it. Any font change ? It's really like the ratio between this two sizes (addons icon and fonts of the bars) is not the same in FF21 and FF22.

I have this same problem, and fixing the CSS pixels-per-pixel ratio made web pages the same size, but made everything in Firefox's UI all tiny and squinty. Now the text in menus and things is hardly legible. But the alternative is to totally lose the functionaly of the reset-zoom-to-neutral command, which I use a lot because my girlfriend keeps blowing things up to giant size, and even if I use it, I never know what the actual size of anything is, and there probably isn't any zoom setting that accurately reproduces a true 1:1 ratio of pixels, which I want to have when viewing people's photography so it isn't degraded by aliasing issues.

I very much would like to roll back this update, even though the previous version is failing utterly to handle background-attachment: fixed. The whole reason I downloaded this update was to see if it corrected that bug, and now I have two bugs.

Hi paulkienitz, as a workaround you can enlarge the chrome area (menu, toolbars, tabs) using this extension: Theme Font & Size Changer. Other posters have reported that a value like 17 gets close to the native size. Any luck?

I just added an extension called Default Full Zoom Level, and set it to .8 for all sites. This lets the UI look the way it wants, while making it so that Ctrl+0 gives me a 1:1 ratio.

The gf would probably like the extra magnification...

All these confusing explanations on how to fix something that never should have been changed. It just pisses me off that I now have to get used to inferior graphics because someone thought it would be cool to screw with settings people have obviously been using for who knows how long. I have tried simply zooming down and that doesn't work. I am not going to enter a bunch of techie gobbledeegook and screw up my whole internet experience. I am just PISSED!!!!

How about another version to correct this? Hey, if someone wants to stay with this one, fine. At least give us people who aren't tech wizards an option to stick with what we have and what we have been happy with for years. Now, excuse me.. I need to get away from this.. I am so f***king pissed!!!

30 minutes later: Okay, I went to about:config and a window came up .. pretty much telling me my computer would blow sky high and take me with it. I'm just an old lady who WAS passing my time browsing and playing a few games. Oops, I'm getting mad again. PS I NEVER talk like this, but this has ruined my whole fricken day.

15 minutes later: I decided to give up. I went to play some monopoly at my favorite game site and the pop up window with the game board was unplayable. The board was way down the window and not complete. So, I went back and despite all the warnings went back to Version 21. I have used Firefox for years and have sworn by it and defended it and given it my best reviews. up until now. I absolutely don't want to quit FF, but I don't know all the tech stuff, I guess is required to change formats back to what you are used to. I still can't believe FF would make a drastic change across the board without warning or giving a choice. If I didn't know how to downgrade, I wouldn't be able to use my PC to help me get through each day. Why why why?

Hi faith552, I'm sorry to hear about your day being ruined.

I think the purpose of this change was reduce the number of sites that users had to zoom up in order to be able to see clearly. Over the years, users have either done that manually, or have installed add-ons like NoSquint and Default FullZoom Level. By checking your Windows zoom level, it seemed Firefox could get much closer to a size that would be comfortable for everyone right out of the box. But for many people, it seems that applying the full Windows zoom level to page content is too much zoom.

I don't know what is in store for us with this feature in the future. I would not be surprised to see an add-on that combines a bunch of these adjustments do you don't need to use the about:config preferences editor.

At least when I had to zoom, I could zoom in, then change it back. I don't know what "they" were thinking. They sure as heck weren't considering the older generation who use a computer and think it works from magic. I do know a little, but just enough to get me into trouble if I start trying to "fix" things. Like you say, maybe they will offer up another add-on. Maybe they should offer the add-on for those who want to change things instead of forcing everyone who uses Firefox to change.

The more I think it over and get used to the change, the more I think it's probably appropriate and valid for a lot of websites, maybe even the majority. And as "retina"-density displays start to become popular on the desktop, all of the browsers will have to start implementing a similar feature. But I do need the ability to retain a true 1:1 zoom for some sites. I think the extension I'm using, "Default Full Zoom Level", should be able to address this well -- it can remember a setting per-site or per-page.

Is there a less complicated way to fix the large font & browser display. Maybe an add on or something? I'm not tech savvy. If FF doesn't fix this issue soon, guess I'll have to switch to Chrome, or maybe I can revert back to V21.

Hi xxanne8xx, the straightest line back toward the earlier style of display is the following two step approach:

Step 1: Install the Theme Font & Size Changer extension. Why? Because turning off the scaling affects the chrome area (menus, toolbars, and tabs) as well as the content.

After restarting Firefox, click the new "A" icon at the right end of the navigation toolbar and change the font size from Normal to 15.

Step 2: Change your global scaling in the about:config preferences editor.

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.

(2) In the filter box, type or paste pix and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click layout.css.devPixelsPerPx and change its value to 1.0 for Firefox 21-sized fonts in the content area.

This should take effect immediately without another restart.

if 1.0 (=100%) makes sites too small for you, try 1.1 (would relate to 110%), 1.2 or whatever other value fits your needs

How about instead of making everyone in the world go through all that technical crap, if Mozilla just makes it so we can keep the old settings? You know. The ones that most users enjoyed using? I've changes my settings over and over. Nothing is as easy to use and read as the settings before the update.
