Upgraded from XP to Win 7 - how do I import my old bookmarks?

I just upgraded to a Windows 7 PC from XP. I had the old hard drive installed next to the new one so I wouldn't have to transfer files. I'd like to import my old bookmarks to my new installation of Firefox but I don't see any easy way to do that. I've searched for a "places.sqlite" file on the old hard drive and there isn't one I've been able to find.

places.sqlite would be in Firefox's profile folder. You can get to it:

  • C:\Users\<Windows login/user name>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile folder>

There you can copy the places.sqlite file and paste it into C:\Users\<Windows login/user name>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile folder> and overwrite the old .sqlite file.

On Windows XP the Firefox program folder is in this location.

  • C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\

Note that the "AppData" folder in Windows Vista and later Window 7+ versions and the "Application Data" folder in XP/Win2K are hidden folders.

For the bookmarks you can either use the places.sqlite file or restore the bookmarks from a JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder.
