I have several computers that I use Firefox on and I am interested in using Sync. Some computers have some of the same bookmarks, other bookmarks are only on one computer. None of them are organized the same way. My question is what will happen when I try to Sync all these bookmarks? Each time I add a computer to the account will it be rewritten with what is already on the account from the first computer I Synced? Will the new computer simply add all its bookmarks to the account and I have to sort out the mess? I am fine with the second option, if that is what happens, I just don't want to lose any bookmarks.

Depending on the settings, Sync should copy everything from one to the others. If the bookmark library's are set up differently, you may end up with a mess.

These add-ons can be a great help by backing up and restoring Firefox

FEBE (Firefox Environment Backup Extension) {web link} FEBE allows you to quickly and easily backup your Firefox extensions, history, passwords, and more. In fact, it goes beyond just backing up -- It will actually rebuild your saved files individually into installable .xpi files. It will also make backup of files that you choose.

1. My question is what will happen when I try to Sync all these bookmarks? Bookmarks from Desktop / Laptop devices should merge into one list. Bookmarks from Mobile devices should be in a "Mobile" folder or folders. And not every desktop / laptop bookmark will Sync to a Mobile device [I know little about the actions of Sync with "Mobile", don't have one.] How well the merge happens depends upon whether or not you are using any Separators in the main Bookmarks Menu folder. The layout of Folders might have an impact, too.

2. Each time I add a computer to the account will it be rewritten with what is already on the account from the first computer I Synced? Over a bit of time [how long depends upon how many bookmarks and how many devices] your list of bookmarks will merge, as I stated above.

3. Will the new computer simply add all its bookmarks to the account and I have to sort out the mess? Initially there may be a "mess", but it might straighten itself out over a bit of time. IMO, the more you open and close Firefox over the first day or two of using Sync per device the smaller "mess" you'll have. Also, you might have a better or quicker "merge" during the week vs. a weekend, IMO.

You shouldn't actually lose any bookmarks, but the transferring of all your bookmarks data may not happen as fast as you expect or want depending upon the Sync server load and the time / day you are connecting new devices. Patience, before getting frustrated at the perceived initial results!
