Why won't Firefox support the NYTimes website? I am a subscriber to NYTimes.com But every time I open the website I get several messages from the NYTimes asking me to subscribe. And everytime I read ten articles I must login again with my NYTimes.com account. There was no problem with this in the past. But several months ago it changed for the worse. I telephoned NYTimes.com and they told me that Firefox no longer supports the NYTimes.com website, as it used to. Hence, I must constantly log in and I constantly get the messages asking me to subscribe. Since the NYTimes is probably the leading newspaper in the USA, Firefox ought to support it in a way that I no longer have to login every time and will no longer get all those messages. In fact, I think that there has been a general deterioration of Firefox. What is going on?

A detail like a website remembering you (log you in automatically) is stored in a cookie.

You can use these steps to make a website remember you:

  • Create a cookie 'allow' exception to keep such cookies, especially in case of secure websites and when cookies expire when you close Firefox.
  • Tools > Options > Privacy > "Use custom settings for history" > Cookies: Exceptions

In case you use "Clear history when Firefox closes" or otherwise clear history.

  • do not clear the Cookies
  • do not clear the Site Preferences

Clearing "Site Preferences" clears all exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, software installation, passwords, and other website specific data.

Clearing cookies will remove all specified (selected) cookies including cookies with an allow exception that you would like to keep.

"Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems:

  • Firefox/Tools > Options > Privacy > "Use custom settings for history" > Cookies: "Show Cookies"

If clearing cookies doesn't help then it is possible that the cookies.sqlite file that stores the cookies got corrupted.

  • Rename (or delete) cookies.sqlite (cookies.sqlite.old) and if present delete cookies.sqlite-shm and cookies.sqlite-wal in the Firefox profile folder in case the file cookies.sqlite got corrupted.
