Older emails in my inbox periodically delete automatically without my deleting them to trash. They disappear from my inbox and are not in my trash. I find they are gone and I have found no way to recover them.

How old is "older"? Who is the email provider for this account? Do they have a clear statement about their retention policy?

You leave messages in the Inbox? Try moving them somewhere else. If the deletions stop then we know it is your server doing it, or some unexpected interaction between it and Thunderbird.

I file my messages, incoming and outgoing, according to topic, context or correspondents. I aim to keep my Inbox, Sent, Trash and Junk folders empty. I don't get any random deletions.
