How to remove Pocket from Bookmark menu -- Mozilla instructions do not work.
Firefox displayd an empty item called View Pocket List near the top of the bookmark menu. I don't know what it is; I don't want to know. I just want to get rid of it so it doesn't uselessly take up space every time I open the menu.
It doesn't appear in the Show All Bookmarks window, so I can't delete it directly. I looked for instructions and found a Mozilla Support page titled "Disable Pocket for Firefox," which says:
Remove Pocket from your toolbar or menu 1. Right-click on the Pocket icon. 2. Select Remove from Toolbar.
Great. But when I right-click the Pocket icon on the menu, there IS no Remove from Toolbar item. The menu contains these entries: Open All in Tabs; New Bookmark; New Folder; New Separator; Paste (disabled); and Show Recently Bookmarked.
How do I get rid of this thing?

View Pocket List appears for me too in the Menu Bar > Bookmarks drop-down menu, even though I never enabled the Pocket feature. Other menu items do appear once Pocket has been used.
Here is a UserStyle (for use with Stylish) to hide the various Pocket menu items in the Firefox UI. https://userstyles.org/styles/114712/pocket-feature-hide-menu-items-fx38-0-5-up
Or you can use Menu Wizard to hide the 7 Pocket menu items & menu separators that appear in the Firefox UI. But most don't appear until the Pocket extension has been used for the first time, as I recall when I tested it as a new feature in Firefox 38.0.5. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/s3menu-wizard/

I do not see an unwanted Pocket icon or entry. I do not use or need Pocket. What do you see and exactly where is it ? Can you provide a screenshot please
If it is the pocket icon on a toolbar it should just drag back to the main menu area or the palette of unused options if you use the customise option.
The article
Also has instructions that seems to work ok for me. BUT note that is talking about the icon when it is between the menu button and the search bar on the Firefox navigation toolbar. Are you asking about another location where you are seeing this ?
Here's a snapshot...
The Pocket toolbar button looks like a gray version of that red icon. Can you find it anywhere on your main toolbar or on your application menu (the graphical menu that opens when you click the button with three horizontal bars on it)? That gray icon button is what you need to right click > Remove from Toolbar (or Remove from Menu, as the case may be).

Ed I have no problem in removing pocket following the instructions in my earlier post. I have tried & confirmed in 32 bit Fx Release using a clean profile.
Initially there is a pocket icon on the navigation bar. Pocket does not show up in the bookmarks sidebar - thus the reason it seems difficult to remove. It does however appear as entries in the dropdown from the menu bar bookmarks menu and the bookmarks icon dropdown. However once I drag the pocket icon in to the palette of additional unused icons those entries are no longer seen.
No need to even restart Firefox. Screenshots of the bookmarks menu and the customise option with pocket icon removed are attached. (Click to enlarge).
jscher, as it happens, I stumbled across the Pocket toolbar button between the time I posted the picture and the time I read your reply. I deleted it. The menu item remained.
I installed Menu Wizard and was able to remove the unwanted item.
Firefox seems to be getting more unstable over time. "Set and forget" items come unstuck with increasing frequency. Every time something happens, I spend time figuring out how to repair it. Sometimes I can't figure it out on my own and have to call on you good folk to spend time helping me.
Where will this lead? I can imagine having to retire at some point to free up enough time to keep Firefox running. :)

Many of the most prolific support contributors here are retired! LOL
I retired the first time a few years before I even started using Firefox for the first time in 2002.

The article steps work for me in a new profile. Perhaps some setting(s) in an older, more heavily customized profile affects how it works. Over the past year or two, Pocket changed from an add-on to a feature back to an add-on, so there were opportunities for legacy settings to interfere with the "new" way that it works. That may be complicated to untangle.
I'm running FF v 49.0.2 and I got rid of 'View Pocket List' from the bookmarks drop-down and from the menu toolbar completely by going into about:config and setting extensions.pocket.enabled to false
