Firefox stops working with 'debug' message

more options

A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, open the script in the debugger, or let the script continue.

Script: https://ajax.aspnetcdn.com/ajax/jQuery/jquery-1.9.1.min.js:5

Whether it's this exact message or not it is not uncommon (once every couple of hours or so) to have Firefox stop working and show this message. It works far more 'clunky' (slow, cryptic, unpredictable, unreliable) since about three updates ago.

I see this from time to time. One possibility is that an add-on is modifying the page in a way that the script does not run properly. Another possibility is that the site is not fully compatible with Firefox. The more different sites are affected, the more I would suspect an extension. The Skype extension has a bit of a reputation for causing unresponsive script warnings, for example.

You can view, disable, and often configure and remove unwanted or unknown extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a (Mac: Command+Shift+a)
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Extensions. Then cast a critical eye over the list on the right side. All extensions listed here are optional and under your control/responsibility to manage. If in doubt, disable.

Often a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.

Any improvement?
