Hello,

Before I only had to type "Supenatural IMDb" and hit enter and it used to take me to the site straight away showing Supernatural series page, but now all these suggested links come up first. What can I do to make it like it was before?

Please also check this topic I created 6 years ago: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/901741 All worked well after that topic, until FF got rid of "keyword.URL".

I know the: "keyword.URL" option doesn't appear anymore, hence, I had started using the add-on "Keyword Search" (?kws) ever since to fix that issue, which meant I could still use the URL bar for quick searches. In Quantum, it's stopped working again, and even "?kws" add-on doesn't help anymore.

Quick example: "supernatural imdb" would take me here: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0460681/

Now it takes me here: https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=supernatural+imdb&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-b-ab&gfe_rd=cr&dcr=0&ei=1SosWu-SB--v8weworLgDg

I know what "keyword searches" function is, guys, I do not want that. I just want things back to the way it was before. Chrome still works like that, thank goodness, but I'd prefer FF for my browsing experience.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Hi saquab, it sounds like you were using the "Browse By Name" feature of Google search which would sometimes go directly to the top result rather than presenting the results page.

After you install "Keyword Search (WebExtension)" you need to set up your preferred keyword search, and use a slightly different approach:

(1) Set up

Open the Keyword Search options on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a (Mac: Command+Shift+a)
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
  • type or paste about:addons in the address bar and press Enter/Return

In the left column of the Add-ons page, click Extensions. Then find the extension on the right side and click its Options button. I assume you want:

  • Keyword Search Engine: Google
  • Google Features: Browse by Name

(2) Changing how you enter your query

You need to type k and a space before your query to trigger the extension. So:

k Supenatural IMDb

There are other ways to go about this:

(1) Switch from using the built-in Google search plugin to one that always uses "Browse by Name". You can install that from here:

(2) Install a search engine plugin or create a bookmark keyword for IMDB search. If you only search that rarely, then having Google do the work probably is simpler.

jscher2000,

Make that 6708 solutions you've offered the community. You, Sir, are a legend.

Just to clarify, it's the following part of your solution(s) that actually helped, the other bits didn't do anything for me. So hope this can help other users in the future, too.

I've scrapped the other add-on (?kws) and now use the following, as per your recommendation:

Add-ons site: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/google-browse-by-name-search/ -- note: does not pull search suggestions, if those are important to you (after installing, you can make this the default)

And I don't have to put "K" before the search, either. Just a simple "supernatural imdb" or "Tyson wiki" will take me to the site and display info about Mike Tyson on wikipedia, for example. Awesome.

Ideally, would prefer FF to implement "keyword.URL" back again. Can't imagine they would after deleting it over 6 years ago. One can hope. Hopefully I don't have to come back again after 6 years. lol.

This search feature is very important to me. Thank you very much, jscher2000.

All the best.
