Problem using send to, using mapi ON WINDOWS
When I right click on a file and try to send it to an email recipient the following message pops up:
There is no email program associated to perform the requested action. Please install an email program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the default programs control panel.
When I open the default programs panel, I see that Thunderbird (the email program I use) is set as a default under email.
Can someone tell me why this doesn't work?

If the method described above doesn't fix the problem, download and run the full installer, select TB as the default email program during the installation, then restart the computer (important). All MAPI operations, including Send to - Mail recipient in File Explorer should then work.

Hi I had this happen a while ago, and the problem went away after I updated Thunderbird and its add-ons (Exquilla). However it might also be associated with a Windows 10 update. So, try updating TB and add-ons. Restart the computer. If the problems persists, try this - Open default programs in Windows, and set the email client to something else. Restart computer. Go into default programs again and set back to TB. Restart computer. If that fails you'll need a more expert helper, so I hope this works for you. Agnes

Thanks for the quick reply. Your solution did the trick. Thanks, Jim
I have a problem on 2 PC's and one laptop running Ubuntu 18.04 laptop running 19.04. Thunderbird 68.4.1 When I try to send I either get an alert with lots of data of the fault , or the send sit there trying to send. The Laptop & one pc have win 7 running Thunderbird but that never fails. big investigation by my ISP - there Microsoft Exchange mail server is running correctly on my connection.
also I have loaded different version of Linux, and they all work with Thunderbird are version 60,8 .0 60.5.2 60.5.1 60.9.0
Is the problem the version of Thunderbird, or not
regards bill

Unfortunately your issue has nothing to do with the original poster's, which was a Windows-related issue.
You are not using OWL for the exchange mail account?
If you check Help > Troubleshooting to you see crash IDs under the crash reports section?
I don't know what's going on here but, I'm not the one who asked this question so, why am I getting these emails?
Sorry. I was the one that posted the original question. I was reacting to a post that I received from bshepard42 which had nothing to do with my original problem. When I clicked on - this doesn't answer my question - I was able to see the entire thread and realized my mistake in my previous post. I was able to fix my problem using the instructions from sfhowes.
Having a similar problem right after the last windows OS update. I have not fixed it yet. I use Endicia Dazzle which sends an email. It reports that i have no default email installed, then specifically NO MAPI . So I go to all the trouble of creating a new MAPI Thunderbird account. same error. restart. updates. same error. Then - a new 32bit version of Thunderbird shows up. I check installed programs and there is a new installation in the C:/PFx86 folder. I uninstalled it. It installed again. Regedit shows Thunderbird as the default "mailto" in HKCR/mailto under HKCR/mapi the default is not set with lots of references underneath to mssvp.dll a key in HKCR/Wow6432Node\CLSID shows "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Thunderbird\thunderbird.exe" /MAPIStartup another inprocserver: C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Thunderbird\MapiProxy_InUse.dll In HKCU/Software/ Thunderbird/Launcher both programs are listed with D_word (1)
Using 2 different Thunderbirds does not seem like a plan. I am very frustrated and really want to be able to email through my programs.
If you still see a problem when using version 68, please file a bug report
