I used to be able to open a new tab by clicking on a link with my middle mouse wheel. Now, it displays what the system tray's TASK VIEW icon shows.

Hi, hold down the Shift key when you start Firefox to start in Safe Mode. More - Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode.

If it works in Safe Mode, restart Firefox, then disable any theme or extensions you have - 3-bar menu > Add-ons > Themes/Extensions and restart Firefox again; now if it's OK, re-enable them one by one until you find the culprit. You may need to restart Firefox after enabling some extensions.

Good idea but unfortunately opening FF in SafeMode didn't correct my issue; but thanks for your suggestion. Dan

Do you have special mouse driver software that could be causing this?

Make sure you have set the middle-click to default in the mouse driver.

Boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support to see if that has effect in case security software is causing problems.

Almost same problem, middle click should open new tab but instead I was getting some useless Microsoft menu with Edge and Outlook stuff. I found by toggling the setting in about:config for the middle mouse button (browser.tabs.opentabfor.middleclick) that the middle button started working.
