Thunderbird 91.1.0 email notification not showing in system tray

more options

Following the recent upgrade to 91.1.0 (from 78.13.0) Thunderbird no longer shows an icon in the system tray when a new email is detected.

I have the server settings so that Thunderbird does not download emails automatically. On detection of an email on the server, the name of the mailbox turns blue and a sound is played but the icon is absent. The icon only appears once the email is downloaded from the server AND the email remains in the inbox after filtering. If the email goes through a filter there is no icon shown. This seems rather to defeat the purpose of the system tray notification.

I find the system tray notification very useful as a quick visual check, especially if I've been away for a while and haven't heard the sound. Otherwise I have to open the application up to check the colour of the mailbox.

In W10 Settings, Personalization, Taskbar, Notification area, is TB turned ON?

more options

All the settings I can find for notifications are already turned on including which icons can appear on the taskbar. These haven't been changed. This appears to be a retrogression with respect to 78.13.0

Enter configuration editor and enter badge. Change the option.

I have tried toggling the badge setting (mail.biff.show_badge) but it only determines whether a number (of unread emails) appears against the Thunderbird icon on the taskbar. As far as I can tell, it doesn't affect the notification area of the system tray, which still doesn't register when a new mail is detected on the server

Sarabande,

According to 91.1.1 release notes fixed the following. Windows tray message count badge displayed the "unread" count instead of the "new" message count.

Notifications for subfolders are still a mess.

Please restore the envelope icon for new msgs. I don't like having no visual alert but I dislike the mini-thunderbird icon with the red circle on it and nothing I tried would eliminate that red circle. The only choices are for what count it shows. The count is completely useless to me and the red circle is annoying so I had to turn off that option. Please let us have a simple new msgs have arrived icon appear in the tray. Many thanks.
