Migration from Windows Live Mail to Thunderbird 91 Problems
I migrated from Windows Live Mail to TB. As recommended, I installed Ver 31, transferred the files, email and contacts. It all seems to work, picks up and sends email. I understood that it was supposed to upgrade to the latest version. The Help menu shows that this (31) IS the latest version. When I manually upgrade to 91, It will not stop asking me for the password, no matter how many times I enter it. I have checked that the server settings are all the same. What am I supposed to do here? Is there a fix for this? Dougal

Who is the mail provider for the accounts? The type of authentication that worked in 31 might not be valid for 91.
Thanks for your reply. The email is provided through the website hosting company HostMDS. I am using their recommended authentication. What different authentication is required by 91? It might also help if the software updated automatically. Dougal
TB does update automatically, although it sometimes requires manual updates between major versions such as from 31 to 45 or 52, 60, 68, 78 etc. Also, auto updates to 91 have not yet been offered, in order to fix update bugs.
But for your password problem, I don't know why you would get repeated requests, if you have the correct settings and check the box in the password prompt to store the password. The host recommends settings with no connection security, so that should work in 91.
To erase all password data, Help/More Troubleshooting, Profile Folder, Open Folder, delete or rename key4.db, cert9.db, logins.json and pkcs11.txt. They are recreated automatically when TB restarts. You might also see obsolete files such as key3.db, cert8.db and secmod.db. You should be prompted for the password when TB restarts, so enter it and check the box to save it.
Settings for the POP account should be mail.yourdomain.com on port 110, security = none, authentication = password, transmitted insecurely, User Name = email address; mail.yourdomain.com on port 25 or 26, security = none, authentication = password, transmitted insecurely, User Name = email address.
Well, it is coming along. I managed to install Ver 91 and get it to get new mail without problems. It still asks for the password, when I send email, though. I am using the recommended setting, Security NONE, insecure password. I have tried both ports 25 nd 26, and others. It always asks for the password when I try to send email. The email send is good.
You shouldn't have to enter the password after the first time if the box to have it saved appears in the prompt. Open Config. editor from Preferences/General/Indexing and check the preference signon.rememberSignons . If it's false, change it to true, then restart TB and see if the checkbox appears.
I am sorry. I should not have marked it as solved. It is not. I will try that config editor and let you know. I really appreciate all your help although I am tempted to just use Ver 31, since it works perfectly well and deal whit it if it ever auto updates.
I have been trying to get Version 78 to work. This has a different problem. When I compose a new message, click on the SEND button and nothing happens. I see some suggestions that this can be caused by plugins. I have no plugins and it still happens in SAFE mode. If I try to reply to a message, the SEND button stay grey. It is not even clickable. Opening the error console, the message seems to be just that the SEND button is not working. Very frustrating.
