I can not download the new version of Firefox. I keep getting a message that says "Firefox 5.0.1dmg could not be opened, because an unknown error occurred" HOW do I fix this?
Every time I try to download the new version it just says I can not download the new version of Firefox. I keep getting a message that says "Firefox 5.0.1dmg could not be opened, because an unknown error occurred - Try saving to disk first and then opening the file"

If you have problems with updating or with the permissions then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.
Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the DMG file to the desktop
- Firefox 5.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
- Trash the current Firefox application to do a clean (re-)install
- Install the new version that you have downloaded
Your profile data is stored elsewhere in the Firefox Profile Folder, so you won't lose your bookmarks and other personal data.
Hummm, Any other ideas? I've tried this about 3 times. Does it matter if I'm using a Mac? I can download it onto my Imac, but I've tried to trash it and re - install it 3 times now on this MacBook. Maybe I'm not finding all of Firefox to trash? I just dragged it to my trash folder and hit empty.

You can try to repair the disk permissions.
