I receive and have to open many Word (doc and docx) documents each day. When downloaded, they should open automatically. I have told Option> Applications to use Word (2007) for both types of files. When I click on the link, the Opening *** dialog box comes up. with the option to open with Word (default). I have also clicked "Do it automatically from now on". But it doesn't, this dialog box keeps coming up. How can get the file to open automatically, so by-pass this additional step?

Thank you

Hi cvhorie,

You might want to look at the article Preferences not saved. There is a lot of good information on in there they might help you if your pref.js file is having issues.

Hopefully this helps!

Matt Thank you for the lead. I found 2 copies of prefs.js, renamed them then restarted Firefox. But the problem is still there.

Any other thoughts?

Thank you. It appears that this is a longstanding bug caused by the way the server and Firefox reads, and misinterprets, the file type. There should be a way for Firefox to read the text of a file name extension and start an appropriate application (automatically), and not rely on more complicated clues which are going wrong.
