I am using a release update channel. I have no idea how or why it occuredabout 3 weeks ago. Every time I close firefox and open another session later, every remembered password is gone when I check under Options and I must re-enter all passwords and user ID's of any website I visit. Firefox will ask to save password, and I do. But they will be gone if I close firefox. This is very distressing

Make sure that you do not use "Clear history when Firefox closes" to clear the Passwords.

  • Tools > Options > Privacy: History: [X] Clear history when Firefox closes > Settings

If you use cleanup software like CCleaner then check the settings for the Firefox application.

I got a listing of "password" related sites. I am not sure what you mean by the rest of your post. Thank you for taking the time to try to help me.

"Clear history when Firefox closes" is NOT checked. I have checked and re-checked my settings in Options, they are as they should be and have always been.

Thank you for taking the time to try to help me.

Do you mean names and passwords in the Password Manager or do you mean that you are no longer logged on to (remembered by) websites after closing and restarting Firefox?

There is a difference between remembering the name and password in the Password Manager and a "remember me" check box on a web page to log you in automatically.
The latter usually involves the creation of a special "remember me" cookie that is stored on your computer and that is send to the server.
If that "remember me" cookie is removed or gets corrupted or is not send to the server then the server won't remember you anymore and you need to sign in once again.

When I close Firefox all sites, usernames and passwords I have remembered in Password Manager are wiped out. I must re-enter all usernames and passwords that had previously been saved. When I enter them again Firefox will ask if it should save, I say yes, and the information is saved...until I close Firefox.

This problem started when I updated to Firefox 10.0.2. I was unaware that it was a release update channel. Perhaps that has something to do with it. I tried downloading Firefox again successfully, but the lost password issue continued.

I just thought of something. Sometimes during a Firefox session I will sign out of a site and visit it again. Occasionally all I have to do is enter the first letter of my username and Firefox will complete it and I am signed in.

Which security software (firewall, anti-virus) do you have?

Sounds like a problem with the files signons.sqlite and key3.db (encryption key) in the Firefox Profile Folder

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

I ran a new anti-malware and it found 2 broken.open command, I believe in the registry.

Today all my passwords were available and I closed Firefox 3 times as a test.

This has happened before, then a day or two later they all disappear again. I will take a wait and see attitude.

THANK YOU abyssal, cor-el and ideato. I really appreciate you trying to help me. Hope I won't be back for this again. lol
