I just transferred over to Thunderbird from Windows Live Mail. With View/Sort by/From, Ascending (or Descending) and Grouped By Sort, the Threads Pane is grouped into senders, in ascending or descending alphabetical order, but the messages for each sender are always sorted in ascending order of date. It's not possible to choose more than one parameter on which to sort.
