There's a helpful article here which explains the process: you can do it from Thunderbird or any other email client. http://www.wikihow.com/Email-to-a-Cell-Phone As you say, the trick is to find the right email domain. First you have to find the carrier, then you'd need to search on line for the SMS domain for that company. I guess it might be on their website. Remember to keep the message short, and send it as plain text only.
