Every time I go to google.com.au from any other site Firefox crashes.
For the last two days, every time I go from any other site to Google.com.au (my homepage) Firefox crashes. I can then go back to Google, after Restoring, and I can refresh Google without crashing, but whenever I go to another site and then back to Google, it crashes again. I've done an update using Software Updater (I'm using Linux Ubuntu) and there has been no respite. Google searches haven't found anyone else who seems to have this problem - is it just me?

That sounds weird.

Does this also happen with the Firefox version from the Mozilla server?

That's all of them. I don't know if it happens with the Firefox version from the Mozilla server. I'm afraid I'm not hugely tech-savvy.
Thanks.
That are problems with DRI (Direct Rendering Infrastructure) as you can see if you inspect a crash report.

Try the Firefox version from the official Mozilla server if you currently use a version from the repositories of your Linux distribution.
I'm afraid I don't know how to install/implement a Tar archive. Plus, if I reinstall Firefox, won't I lose all my bookmarks, stored passwords, and preferences? Is there a way to retain them?
I also didn't understand the DRI article . . . sorry.
The Firefox profile folder is in the home directory in "~/.mozilla/firefox/" and isn't affected by (re)installing Firefox.
You only need to extract the files in the tar archive to a Firefox installation folder, either a folder in the home directory if you want to be able to update Firefox in an easy way or in a folder in a location with root permissions that would require to start Firefox via sudo to be able to update.
Well, I slept on it, and this morning the crashes aren't happening (I was going to attempt to reinstall today). The only difference between now and yesterday is that yesterday there was a Google Doodle on the page and now there isn't. Provided the problem doesn't re-occur, I think I'm probably good . . .
Thanks.
