Why am I suddenly getting a security warning on many known sites?

more options

I am suddenly getting the following message on many valid sites, such as The National Weather Service: The information you have entered on this page will be sent over an insecure connection and could be read by a third party.

"Security Warning: The information you have entered on this page will be sent over an insecure connection and could be read by a third party. Are you sure you want to send this information?"

I do not get this on Edge, IE, or Chrome. This only started with the newest upgrade of Firefox.

Thanks.

Hi nodnyl1, normally that warning appears if you are on an HTTPS page, and you fill a form, and you submit the form, but the form is being sent to an HTTP address. In other words, "from secure, to insecure."

This is not a new warning -- it's probably been in there since Firefox 1 -- so I don't know why you are suddenly seeing it now. When you try the same thing in your other browser(s) are you starting on an HTTPS page (lock icon) or an HTTP page? The message doesn't appear for insecure-to-insecure.

Thanks for replying. No, these warnings are coming from my being in an HTTP site, going to and HTTP site, same situations I've done for ages. And, in other browsers, this does not happen. I tested them. It's only happening in Firefox since I upgraded to the newest version. I changed nothing other than the upgrade. I have always had latest IE, and I downloaded Chrome and Edge to see if it happened there. It didn't, from and to the same sites.

I suppose I could totally uninstall Firefox and try to reinstall it rather than upgrade. But, this appears to be an issue that should be checked.

Usually uninstalling/reinstalling is a waste of time, so you're right not to rush into that.

Could you give the steps to reproduce the problem? Meaning:

  • here's the URL of the page to start on
  • here's the thing to do or to click on the page to trigger the problem
