Please paste Sync error-log contents to Mozilla Pastebin. This forum software doesn't respect the text formatting line breaks which makes those logs hard to read and the capacity is less than the character count of many error logs.
And make sure you select a month to the right of "Your Name" for data retention, the default of a day usually isn't long enough.
Then after submission @ Pastebin post the resultant URL to this forum thread using the "Post a Reply" box.
If you use Sync then best is to disconnect Sync temporarily during troubleshooting.
You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database (bookmarks and history) in the Firefox profile folder.
- use "Verify Integrity" on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page
See also:
- https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Bookmarks+not+saved#w_fix-the-bookmarks-file
If "Verify Integrity" on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page cannot repair places.sqlite then remove all places.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder. Firefox will rebuild places.sqlite and restore the bookmarks from a recent JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder.
- keep a backup copy of places.sqlite in case a new places.sqlite database has to be created
- http://kb.mozillazine.org/Unable_to_process_the_backup_file_-_Firefox
You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.
- Help -> Troubleshooting Information -> Profile Directory:
Windows: Show Folder; Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder - http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox
Three Win10 PC's were connected to Sync, and bookmarks Sync failed.
On that device it looks like that was the first sync process: Line 120 - 1530162308499 Sync.Engine.Clients DEBUG First sync, uploading all items
This seems to be where the Sync procedure for bookmarks failed on that device.
Line 164 - 1530162310786 Sync.Status DEBUG Status for engine bookmarks: error.engine.reason.unknown_fail
Line 165 - 1530162310786 Sync.Status DEBUG Status.service: success.status_ok => error.sync.failed_partial
Line 166 - 1530162310786 Sync.ErrorHandler DEBUG bookmarks failed: Error: Duplicate item or tombstone unfiled in changeset (resource://gre/modules/PlacesSyncUtils.jsm:2192:13) JS Stack trace: addRowToChangeRecords@PlacesSyncUtils.jsm:2192:13
Do you have similar errors in the other 2 devices? Also, it appears that data retention for this Paste is only for one day. That may not be long enough to complete the support process.
Digging down further, this extension triggers a possible cause for that failure with bookmarks sync. XMarks is known for corrupting the Places file in Firefox recently; and it doesn't "play well" with Sync. With the recent demise of XMarks I suspect that is why you are turning to Sync now. (Xmarks was originally called FoxMarks, and the name was changed when they added synchronization capabilities for web browsers beyond Firefox close to 10 years ago, iirc.)
At line 214 - 1530162310803 Sync.Engine.Addons.Store DEBUG foxmarks@kei.com not syncable: add-on not found in add-on repository.
and line 215 - 1530162310803 Sync.Engine.Addons.Store DEBUG foxmarks@kei.com not syncable: add-on not found in add-on repository.
My advice is to "Verify Integrity" of the Places Database in all three Firefox Win10 installations, with Sync Disconnected on all 3 devices.
- Disconnect from Sync in the Menu panel (3-bar button)
- Then in that Menu panel go the button to Help.
- Open Help then open Troubleshooting Information and scroll all the way down to Places Database to Integrity and use the Verify Integrity button.
- Then wait for that process is completed and the results appear in that area.
- And once that is done on the first device see if Sync will work there without throwing an error-log. If that is successful proceed to the 2nd device and make sure that one works correctly. Then move to the 3rd device.
Each device should be fixed by separately to get rid of the corruption; per reports from other users who have reported such problems, and "cutting corners" or being hasty did produce positive results until they "fixed" it on all devices.
edit: whoops, looks like I was too slow reading the error-log and providing my detailed response
