I changed my password by going to Security - Saved Passwords - Edit Password. I then closed that window. Closed Thunderbird. Then reopened Thunderbird. When I click on that account it says "Login to server . . . failed . . . Enter new password." So I enter the new password and click on the box "use Password manager to remember this password." But I keep getting the "login to server . . . failed . . . Enter new password." message.

The only place to actually change your email password is at your email providers server. Doing what you describe changes what is saved in Thunderbird to provide to the server when asked. If you did not actually change the password with your provider it is no wonder the log in operation fails.
