I have been configuring my email signature, and using the "Add Signature" add-on. Having misread the instructions for this addon, I simply placed my signature in a file, and referenced it. But as I want the sig to be available for me to add on demand, only, instead of always included, I need to include it as HTML in the main box, then tick the "Attach from file" option, leaving that field blank. However, I cannot clear the field. It always resets to the last (real-looking) path I had in there. I have put in a path to a file that doesn't exist, but would like to actually clear the field if possible.

The problem is that unticking the checkbox didn't clear the file path, and the setting neede for that Add-on is the literal sig populated, but file checked to use, effectively with the field blank. (Pointing to a non-existent file also worked, but was messy.) Perhaps it's something the add-on inserts into TB so that the literal sig stays populated when file is ticked.

I found a solution:

  • Go to Options > Advance > General tab
  • Click on 'Config editor'
  • Be warned - there are dragons here…
  • In top search type: sig_file
  • Two options will be listed (or two per configured account for which a file has been set) - one a direct file path, and one a relative path
  • To clear, right click and reset default, on each
  • Close the config editor and save changes in Options

Here I can just tick and untick the checkboxes (and clear the text boxes!) So I don't need to actively select any of the three options (literal signature, file, vCard) that are on offer.

If yours really isn't working like this, try Thunderbird in Safe Mode to see if any of your add-ons is causing this. I haven't tried that particular add-on, but as it is apparently intended to modify or help with signatures it may well have modified Thunderbird's behaviour.

I like to pick and choose when to use a signature, so I use the Signature Switch add-on, which gives me the choice, when composing, between multiple signatures or indeed none at all.
