hello lundorff,

Generally, all downloads are saved/stored in one folder of your choosing. Then from there it is up to you what to do with those files, ie open them, move them, rename them, etc....

It is unclear as to why a file that you do not want would be downloaded to your system and without your knowledge, like that txt file you mentioned.

I have not explained this well enough.

I don't want the dialog box asking me where or what to do with the file. When clicking a link leading to fx. a pdf-file it will automatically download to my folder with no dialog box. With txt-files it will either open in the browser or open the dialog box.

Oh I see. I do get the dialog box frequently but not always. I never had given it much thought.

Barring the above, you do have have the FF setting for "not asking you" ?

See attached pic.

I have it set to that yes, and in the list below I can further specify pdf, docx and more to simply download without prompting, but txt is exempt from that list.

Interesting. Thanks for enlightening me.

I had never noticed that the window to set default apps to control files was not customizable.

I have searched around, and it seems you have not been the only one with this issue.

And i have searched around some of the behind options for FF. But i cant find where to add another entry into that window.

I look forward to answer for your good question !

Firefox opens plain text and HTML files by default, and that is difficult to work around. Using right-click > Save Link As... on the link to the file will show a file browsing dialog to choose the folder. Since Firefox usually shows the last folder you used, you might be able to just press Enter in that dialog, but it's still an extra step or two.
