Firefox 4.0b2 just sits there in Safe Mode
I updated today from Beta 1 to Beta Firefox 4.0b2 hoping it would resolve some of the problems I've experienced. Unfortunately, nothing has changed. Well, that's not true. I could have the Beta1 and the latest version of a stable Firefox open at the same time and now, when I start 4.0b2, it won't let me open it with my stable version open. That's changed.
Nothing else has. Even in Safe Mode, it just sits there. I can enter a URL and hit 'send' and nothing happens. The feedback buttons don't work. The extensions and add ons don't work except for personas (which I don't expect in Safe Mode, but none of them work in normal mode either).
It's like a big hole on my screen.
So, that said, since the feedback buttons (made me happy or sad because) don't work, I'm posting this here as I don't know where else to post it except I've had to post it through the stable version of Firefox because the Beta version won't allow me to post the Ask a new question form either.
This happened
Every time Firefox opened
== I installed the new Beta 1 and didn't change with Beta 2

Firefox 4.0b2 is a pre-release version that is intended for testing the code that will become to next release version of Firefox in 5 or 6 months. 4.0b2 has some significant changes that will probably break almost all existing extensions. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/compatibility/report
If you are dependent upon specific extensions, don't use an early beta version until the multitude of changes slows down, and the extension developers have adapted their extensions for the changes in the new code.
If you are using a beta version, you should be using a Profile that you specifically created for that beta version. If you are using a "stable" version and a "beta" version with the same Profile, you are creating your own problems, more than likely. If you don't even know what I am talking about, you shouldn't be "testing" beta versions.
If you think Firefox 4.0b2 sucks, it's probably past your bedtime.
they should release beta versions that are compatible with most addons,, this is not reverse engineering, we should be moving forward not having beta versions released so that surfers can just download and get compromised; these are issues that need addressing before a user downloads these releases
I'm not trying to be rude here, but I posted this problem for some specific help. Not to have people telling me Firefox sucks. Make your own thread if you want to b**** about Firefox, but leave mine to the problem at hand so I can get a little help, please!
Sorry that your thread was hijacked by some clown from the peanut-gallery, but most of my remarks were made to you.
Are you, or are you not, using a specific Profile for your 4.0beta installation?
Firefox 4.0b2 broke most extensions, so until an updated version of each extension is available for the new code in 4.0b2, those broken extensions just aren't going to work and they may break other things. Here is a compatibility report for the most popular extensions that are hosted at AMO. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/compatibility/report
My personal opinion is the the 4.0 trunk shouldn't have gone "beta" until this major change was introduced, "breakage" of that magnitude is something "testers" come to expect in alpha versions, not when the beta stage is reached.
IMO, to solve your problems with 4.0b2 you should create a new Profile and start all over again installing only 4.0b2 extensions, and transfer your personal data to the new Profile.
Beyond that, I can't offer you any more help. I haven't been able to use a 4.0 build that was made after 7/7/2010 because the newer builds are broken in W2K, and I am not yet "fluent" enough with Ubuntu to be messing around with testing any software on Linux.
You can discuss issues with Minefield 4.0 nightly builds and Firefox 4.0 beta builds at the MozillaZine Firefox Builds forum. That forum is better suited to discuss such issues. You need to register on the MozillaZine forum site in order to post at that forum.
the-edmeister: I know you were and I appreciate it. It's just almost every time I try to find a resolution to a problem, I find a thread with something similar and most of the answers are all "gee Firefox just sucks" things and I got irritated.
I did create a new profile and after tinkering with it for a few days, managed to get it to work.
Sort of.
Anyway, sorry I posted in the wrong forum. Won't happen in the future.
