Whenever I type a first letter in the search bar, a drop-down list of items beginning with that letter appears. Can I turn off that feature or clear specific items as a matter of privacy?

To disable history from being stored completely in the location bar, do the following.
- In the location bar, type: about:config and hit Enter.
- In the filter at the top, copy/paste the folllowing: browser.urlbar.maxRichResults
- Double click it and delete the current figure and replace it with -1
- Close the tab and then test it by typing something.
Or you can use:
- Firefox (Tools) > Options > Privacy > Location Bar: When using the location bar, suggest: Nothing
