When I try to restore bookmarks from any of the back up files I get this error message - even after having reset firefox to factory defaults: 'A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete. Script: resource://gre/modules/PlacesUtils.jsm:1384

Whatever I do it finishes with : 'Unable to process the backup file'.

Problem started when half!! my bookmarks disappeared suddenly. Not all, just about half as if they had been cut off. All else seems to work fine, including creating new bookmarks. If I create a new bookmark, quit Firefox, and restart and THEN manualy delete the one new bookmark it will then be restored quite happily from the latest newly created back up file. It is only with the older backup files that there is a problem seemingly. I hope that all the 10 old backups are not somehow corrupt.

HELP.

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database file in the Firefox Profile Folder and delete all places files to see if that makes restoring work.

Sorry - did not mean to click yes, There are 3 places files - delete all 3?

Did not say before - but history still works OK as does making and retaining new bookmarks. Seems puzzling. And only half or so of the old ones got 'sliced' off.

Will try in the morning after a good sleep. All best and thanks for reply.

Yes, you can remove all places files with Firefox closed.

If Firefox isn't running then there should only be one places.sqlite file and no other places files.

Thanks for your help, but..... No success after I shut Firefox down, removed the single places.sqlite file (I kept a copy elsewhere) from the Profile, restarted and then tried a restore. Same error message as before - "A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete.

Script: resource://gre/modules/PlacesUtils.jsm:1384"

All the old History has now gone but the Bookmarks that had not disappeared before are still there.

Is there any alternative to throwing the whole current profile away (albeit saving the bookmark backup files) and starting again so to speak?
