Firefox doesn't open half the time. I get an invisible window, as indicated in the window pulldown menu, there are several no-name pages listed there (just a blank entry where a page name would be) and no window will open when I click the dock icon Mac OSX 10.6.8. I can't open Firefox from the dock until I completely quit and relaunch it.

I have Reset Firefox, tried with and without addons, COMPLETELY deleted all firefox files from my system (searched for all files hidden or otherwise for firefox) several times and reinstalled fresh, and the problem persists. I have repeatedly deleted sessionstore.js. I have repeatedly cleared cookies and cache. This has started within the last 3 or 4 updates to Firefox.

In a nutshell: Click dock icon when Firefox is running but no windows are open. Nothing. Check Window menu, I see a no-name page, or several no-name pages in the menu. Clicking them only puts a checkmark next to the blank item and no window shows. Only quitting and relaunching Firefox completely solves the issue.

It appears the problem is resolved.

I normally use the settings indicated in the screen shot for History settings.

During all my testing, I was using the default "Remember History" setting and changed nothing in prefs and the bug was persistent on default settings.

Today I changed it to "Always use private browsing mode," and browsed to the trouble sites and many others, then I changed it back to the preferred settings in the screen shot.

This seems to have solved the problem reported, there was some strange bug causing the invisible Window menu items with these settings, until I changed to Private browsing mode then back to normal.

Why this would happen is beyond me, and why it would happen with everything I did is a mystery, one the devs should look into (if they even bother to read these reports) for the future.

Something caused this after years of working normally and I went way above and beyond as I indicated to find this stupid bug. It is unimaginable that anything in the Mac OS was responsible for this when all had worked fine for years and I had even done a fresh install of the OS. I can only think some small thing changed in the code with the Firefox v27 release that caused this to stick like it did.

Well I have a fresh fast new OS install as a result.

Thanks to the two people who did respond.

I should note the issue always returns, the quitting is only a temporary fix.

Can anyone explain this? I'm getting no help here and the issue does not go away.

Hi,

Most of the people who answer questions here are volunteers and contribute on their own time. Most times when a question goes unanswered is because your question gets pushed down because of the incoming questions that are coming in. I apologize for that.

OS X is not in my area of expertise but rest assured, someone will be along to answer your question.

Here is where it's coming from, I have found it. Yahoo Mail. So why is it happening, is it dangerous, and what can I do to stop it?? I should note, the screen shot is with starting Firefox in SAFE MODE. So what is all this hidden window garbage from Yahoo and how can I get rid of it?

You can see all the hidden windows showing in the Window menu. So if I close all windows, they remain there and make it impossible to launch Firefox again from the dock, it will only launch again from the dock if I totally quit Firefox and restart it.

Thanks

Well it does it on Chase.com too, and it does it with or without any addons.

CAN ANYONE HELP WITH THIS ISSUE???

I have COMPLETELY wiped my hard drive and reinstalled everything and yet the problem continues!! The browser sucks if it keeps having this issue, there are thousands of people out there and a LOT of volunteers on this project (obviously) AND NOT A SINGLE PERSON CAN PROVIDE ANY FEEDBACK ON THIS??? I find that REALLY REALLY UNACCEPTABLE!!

I have attached additional Screen shots here. Yes, they indicate a theme, but this problem is present in Safe Mode as well.

Here is an update. Guess no one at Mozilla will bother to acknowledge this very real and annoying Firefox Bug and it certainly hasn't been addressed in v28. So can anyone tell me another, or better, avenue to report this? I'm about to start reporting it all over the web as a possible security issue because I have no idea what all these "fake" Window menu items are doing, if anything. Possibly a compromise of security in the program.

Firefox doesn't open half the time when clicking from the dock when it's running and here's why. I get an invisible window when visiting certain sites, as indicated in the window pulldown menu, there are several no-name pages, or even MANY no-name pages stretching down beyond what I can even see at the bottom of the screen, listed there (just a blank entry where a page name would be) and no window will open when I click the dock icon Mac OSX 10.6.8. I can't open Firefox from the dock until I completely quit and relaunch it.

In a nutshell: Click dock icon when Firefox is running but no windows are open. Nothing. Check Window menu, I see a no-name page, or several or even very many no-name pages in the menu. Clicking them only puts a check mark next to the blank item and no window shows. Only quitting and relaunching Firefox completely solves the issue.

This happens most always after visiting Yahoo mail and on Chase.com. This is VERY recent behavior on both websites (possibly others, not sure but I think it's happening from Newegg.com and ebay.com too but nearly every time on the former two) starting with Firefox 27. Update Mar 23 12 pm MST: I have discovered this also happens at Wikipedia.org. Update Mar 24 8 am MST: Also occurs at https://medium.com Update Mar 24 8 am MST: Also definitely confirmed for newegg.com when visiting certain sections of their site (promotions pages). Update Mar 24 3 pm MST: Also happens on Wired.com

I have completely wiped the profile many times, started in safe mode, I have tried with or without addons, brand new installs of Firefox with NOTHING added, I have searched for EVERY firefox pref with FindAnyFile and removed them, I have deleted sessionstore.js multiple times to no avail, and EVEN completely wiped my hard drive and did a totally new installation of Snow Leopard and Firefox, and the problem DOES NOT GO AWAY. Complete wipe of the drive should have solved ANY anomalies with any pref or weirdness on the computer and it has NOT. I am completely and thoroughly frustrated and I just wish that Mozilla would acknowledge the BUG because it has to be a Firefox issue considering I've eliminated ALL other possibilities. I wish I could get ANY information on this issue that isn't like 5 years old. No, you can't see the invisible windows with Expose, please don't go there, that info is ancient. They simply seem to be non-existent invisible entries in the Window menu that won't let you relaunch FF from the Mac OS dock unless you completely quit FF, which is stupid considering it's been working just fine for years and years.

This seems to have started after YEARS of no problems at all like this with Firefox on the Mac, seems like it started at v27.0 and has been the same since.

Hi smtips,

I understand that you are frustrated. You have put alot of time into this and have seen two issues as far as I can tell from your whole thread description.

The errors in your screenshot are CSS errors, which are simple styling that are trying to be loaded with the current page, in this case it was yahoo mail.

"Click dock icon when Firefox is running but no windows are open" You have to hot command + N to open a new window, clicking on the doc icon will not open a new window.

The no noname pages on the other hand is very strange. When you clicked on one of those in safe mode where they still all blank? This will tell you if it is an add on or firewall blocking history from recording the name of the webpage you have open. Did you delete the sessionrestore.js while Firefox was still open? Deleting some of the files in the Firefox profile folder can break some of the functionality of Firefox. But you are right, if this happened even after a clean reinstall and wiping the device there is an issue.

Try this and let me know the results:

  1. Quit Firefox, Right click on doc icon and say quit
  2. Hold Shift and click on the icon
  3. Navigate to one of the webpages and a few
  4. Take a screenshot of the Window menu while still in Safe mode.

My real question, is what you clicked on to get those blank information pages, if we can isolate what is causing that I may have a better idea how to reproduce this.

I will try the console with some of the sites too.

Screens attached. Two notes:

1. The behavior done to get to the URL is in the name of the screen shot.

2. You do not have to type Command-N to launch Firefox from the dock. If no other windows are open, when clicking the dock icon, it opens a new window (your home page). Whether Firefox is on or totally quit. Clicking the dock icon automatically invokes Command N and always has. These extra blank window items prevent that function from working. If a window is already open in the background, clicking the dock icon brings it to the front, but since Firefox "thinks" there is a window open because of those menu items, it does nothing.

Thanks!

If you really want to get into this I can include other shots of the console at any of the sites in question, the sites attached do it every time.

Oh, let's add another screen shot. From this site itself, I browsed to the link through my account. Went to my profile, clicked on the "1 question" link, clicked the article link, and this is what happens here on Mozilla's site. Same stuff.
