Cannot send messages with new charter account
Our provider recently converted to Charter from Optimum. Charter's website had different settings for desktops than for mobile devices, however, when I did the auto set up thru Thunderbird it went with the mobile.charter.net settings. I was able to receive messages just fine but not send them. First I tried using the desktop settings and completely lost the ability to even receive messages so I called their support and they put me back on the mobile.charter.net settings, I had to change my password, and was then able to receive again but still not send. They didn't seem to even know what Thunderbird is and said my settings were correct, it must be an issue on the Thunderbird side. Settings they recommended are: Description: Charter Communications Server Name: mobile.charter.net Port : 587 User Name: xxxxx@charter.net Auth : Normal Password Security: SSL/TLS
I have tried mail.charter.net / smtp.charter.net / and mobile.charter.net Very frustrated at this point. Thank You for any help you can offer

Try to change 'Security' to 'STARTTLS'. Is there a Charter support web site with the correct server settings? Server settings are generic and not dependent on the client you use. So if you speak to them again, tell them you're using Outlook, and ask what the correct SMTP server settings are.

STARTTLS did not work. The settings I listed are the settings they told me to use and he didn't even know what Thunderbird was so was giving me Outlook settings. The problem with the support site is that they now seem to be using the mobile.charter.net settings even for desktops. Even the tech was surprised, like it was brand new.
Mobile Email Settings Including Laptop Computers
Use these settings when setting up your Email on a mobile device. (Laptop computers, Smartphone, PDA, Tablet Computer, eReader, etc.)

SSL: This setting MUST be on for both SMTP and IMAP. Protocol: IMAP Incoming Email Server: mobile.charter.net Port: 993 Outgoing Email Server: mobile.charter.net Port: 587 If applicable: a login will be required when sending and receiving mail.
Please refer to your manufacturers Knowledge Base or Technical Support with additional questions. Desktop Email Settings

Your settings for mobile.charter.net look good. What error message do you get when you try to send mail?

The message is that the server timed out.....
Hmmmm Well I'll be! I had tried, once again the desktop settings and they failed. I first set back incoming and tried to send with the SMTP setting and it failed. When I reset outgoing to mobile and it asked for my password again it sent!! I have reentered that password probably 6 times in the last week and a half! Don't know what was so special this time, but not looking a gift horse in the mouth. :D
Well thank you for your help christ1. :D Apparently just talking it out did the trick.
