I have just downloaded Thunderbird 31.4.0 on my new MacBook Pro (OS X Yosemite 10.10) and am trying to configure my existing gmail account. When the Mail Account Setup wizard prompts me for my gmail username and password it returns the message: "Configuration could not be verified -- is the username or password wrong?". They are not. I have enabled POP and IMAP in my gmail settings and less secure applications, another common issue, are allowed. I've gone through the Captcha thing.

I'm stumped and would appreciate any help.

Thanks.

when did you create your gmail account?

Probably around 2008-09. The same Gmail account was configured to Thunderbird on my old Mac.

The usual causes of these, once you get past the gmail settings and Google stupidity are firewall and anti virus. Although Yosemite has some new security stuff that messes with applications I understand.

I even read one thread where the issue was the timezone and time on the apple device. EMail did not work if the time and timezone were incorrect.
