various sites tell me that my shockwave player is out of date, but when I use the add-on manager to try and update it, the plugin checker is stuck at 'Checking with Mozilla on the status of your plugins'. I've tried restarting firefox and updating shockwave player myself, and these were no help.

You can uninstall the current Flash player version and (re)install the latest Flash version.

See this about uninstalling Flash players:

Note that this will remove all installed Flash players.

You can find the latest Flash player versions for Firefox on this page:

experiencing the exact same problem again.. uninstalling and reinstalling again still works. this would seem to be an issue with firefox rather than the shockwave player, since the plug-in checker -still- isn't working, and it seems unlikely like a new version of shockwave would be needed this quickly.

I'm having the same problem as of this AM. When I use the plug in checker it goes to the following page instead of the usual plugin update page. See attached. I did a FF restart/refresh with no change. Based on my experience and other comments seems to be a FF issue.
