After the upgrade to Thunderbird 38 none of my e-mail accounts are receiving nor sending e-mail anymore. Why?

Btw I just downgraded back to version 31.7 (Dutch) and all is working again without any problems so there must be something different in 38.0.1 which prevents proper connection to e-mail services provided via Siteground.

Make sure Thunderbird isn't blocked by a personal firewall.

Can't be it. Downgraded to v31.7 and all works as should without any changes.

How were you able to go back to previous version. I have the same problem after updating?

Can't be it.

I disagree. This kind of problem happens frequently when a new version of Thunderbird is released. Often a firewall doesn't recognize that this is just a new version of a program it already knows, and just blocks it.

Hi Christ,

You can disagree all you want but that doesn't change my problem. I've been upgrading tonnes of software's in the past and this is the first time I get zero warning of any kind. Firewall I use is Windows Firewall. Security software Avast suite. All I configure normally gives me a warning when it wants to block something.

Would be interesting to see if other people report the same problem.

Happily running again on 31.7

Thanks,

Jan

Btw I've been in IT since 1985 and I do know my way around in Windows, security etc

re Happily running again on 31.7 that is because your antivirus/firewall is allowing that version of Thunderbird which is precisely what would be expected.

Yes people do report this issue after updates and the answer is the new version is being blocked by firewall and/or antivirus.

Example: I use Norton Anti-Virus/Firewall. So Norton is handling both. Sometimes, after an update, Norton still thinks it can allow only the previous version.

I then have to:
  • close Thunderbird
  • access Norton.
  • Settings > Network > Smart Firewall > Program Rules
  • Locate Thunderbird and set to 'Allow'

Sometimes I have had to block, ok and then reset to Allow to get it to pick up the newer version.

It does not say it is using a specific version, but it is.

Located some info on Avast which might help. Avast Blocks Sending and Receiving

My problem was Avast antivirus, once I stopped the service and restarted(virus program ect) thunderbird was once again working perfectly. Its a ssl cache problem within AVAST, not thunderbird.

Test: Try disabling Avast and then run Thunderbird. If all is ok then the issue is Avast blocking.

If disabling Avast did not work, then disable Firewall. so both Firewall and Avast are not working. Then restart thunderbird and test does TB download and send? If this works then it is likely to be the Firewall blocking.

I use AVAST and was unable to send mail. I discovered that Thunderbird's SSL certificate for AVAST apparently does not work with the current version of AVAST (10.4.2233).

My answer (and question) explain what I did. I can now send mail and the AVAST mail shield works as well. [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/que.../1088646]
