on Mac 10.9.5 Firefox updated today (now is 44.0.2) and a few hours later when I went to my history --find that it is ALL deleted.

Did you use the "Show in Finder" button on the about:support page to go to the Firefox profile folder?

If you use the Time Machine on your Mac then try to restore the places.sqlite file from that backup.

You can use this button to go to the current Firefox profile folder:
