only 5or 6 emails are shown when thunderbird is opened. The majority of the screen is an add for thunderbird. I would like the entire screen to show a list of read/unread emails like it did before. This is true "inbox" and "trash"

Go to options-general and uncheck to show the Start page.

You can grab and drag the divider between the message list and the Message Pane to make the Message Pane larger or smaller or turn it off completely by pressing F8.
