Occasionally I receive a loud background sound that accompanies an ad that may or may not be on my screen at the time. It's especially annoying when I happen to be in another room and get these sounds. I tried reloading Firefox and that helped for a day or two but then the sound came back. I don't want to mute the sound on my computer since I need it to notify me of new mail and other things.

Firefox should show a speaker icon on a tab when there is sound playing in that tab. You can click this speaker icon to mute the sound. If you have a lot of tabs open and have scroll buttons then this may not be easy.

I have never encountered this problem when using another browser. I talked with a tech support person at my ISP and was told that the phenomenon is related to the browser that I am using - which happens to be Firefox. I often notice this problem if I am in another room and suddenly hear loud music coming from my computer - very annoying. Running to my computer, checking which tab might show a speaker icon and then muting it does not seem to be a practical solution.

Why does Firefox allow unwanted sound on ads? Is there some way that I can block this sound and still retain the use of sound when I want it?
