Since Windows 10 anniversary update 1607 i cannot open/attach pdf-file in Tunderbird 45.4.0 without causing Thunderbird to crash.

Clicking on the Attachments-tab in options also causes Thunderbird to crash immediately. Disable add-ons, Antivirus or running Thunderbird in safe mode does not help either.

I see a total of 38 crashes, but no real answers. I do with people would put comments in there. SO I will have a couple of guesses.

What anti virus program are you using? McAfee in particular has been having crashes assigned.

Have you tried disk cleanup? try typing it into search, it was first on my list.

I only use Windows Defender as anti virus program and the disk cleanup did not solve the problem. Maybe making a clean install will work, just have to figure how to save all mails and account-settings first.

I see nothing that would be fixed by a reinstall, but go ahead. I have no better solution. Note that none of your settings or mail is touched by a reinstall. ALL you are doing is refreshing the program files and registry settings.
